Clinton, MA

LOCATION
The town of Clinton is located in Central Massachusetts, bordered by Bolton and Berlin on the east, Boylston on the south, Sterling on the west, and Lancaster on the northwest and north. Clinton is 13 miles north of Worcester, 16 miles south of Fitchburg, 35 miles west of Boston, and 200 miles from new York City.

The Town of Clinton straddles the valley of the south branch of the Nashua River and is the site of the Wachusett Reservoir, formed by damming the river in 1905 to provide drinking water for the City of Boston. Clinton's terrain was partly shaped by retreating glaciers which created the present landscape. landscape. The town's abundant water power potential invited textile manufacturing, and a diverse ethnic population followed the creation of mill jobs.  Clinton became successively the state, national and world leader in the manufacture of carpets, cotton gingham and wire cloth and by 1885 was the largest carpet maker in the world.

Our collections include more than 6,000 objects and six historic structures. The collections, landscape and experiences interpret the history and culture of Native people, colonial farmers, 19th century utopians, Shakers, artists and others whose identity, values and sense of place are rooted in New England. Bolton Mass boasts the best apple picking.  Great apple orchards dot the Route 117 in east central Massachusetts and vicinity landscape. Bolton Orchards has a never-ending apple field in a rural setting, seemingly a million miles from civilization (but in reality, a half hour to Worcester and 45 minutes to Boston). Twenty five varieties of apples can be found in the expansive field. They also have a great farm stand and gift shop.

Near Bolton Orchards is Nashoba Valley Winery, with a 52-acre apple orchard, wine tasting tours, and J's Restaurant, a rustic farmhouse known for its sophisticated offerings, farm fresh vegetables and award-winning wines. The setting represents the best of rural New England with its gentle rolling farmland.

Carlson Orchards and Doe Orchards offer fine apple picking facilities in Harvard, one of New England's true gems. After apple picking, it's worth a visit to the town center that consists of a general store, a beautiful lake, the best of colonial homes, and a cool village green -- ideal for sitting under a colorful tree and reading a book.
